Missions

General Context

The increasing integration of renewable energy sources and power-electronic-based conversion systems is significantly changing the dynamic behavior of electrical transmission networks. In this context, STATCOMs represent an important solution for improving voltage control and the dynamic performance of the power system.

This internship aims to investigate different E-STATCOM topologies and their control strategies using EMT simulations. The intern will contribute to the modeling of the selected solutions, the definition of representative grid scenarios, and the assessment of their performance under different operating conditions.

The main objective will be to identify the key advantages of the investigated topologies, as well as the critical operating conditions and limitations associated with their use.

Missions

  • Conduct a state-of-the-art review of the main E-STATCOM topologies and their control structures, comparing their advantages and limitations, in order to select one or two architectures for further investigation.

  • Become familiar with the EMT simulation software used during the internship (EMTP-RV and/or PSCAD).

  • Develop and validate EMT models of the selected E-STATCOM topologies and their associated control systems.

  • An averaged model is considered sufficient for this study.

  • Identify the relevant grid scenarios and critical operating conditions for the study, based on the state-of-the-art review conducted beforehand.

  • Develop and parameterize a representative power system model for the selected scenarios and integrate the E-STATCOM models into the network.

  • Perform EMT simulations and analyze the results in order to assess and highlight the performance of the investigated E-STATCOM topologies.
