INTERNSHIP ENGINEER R&D - Converter Impedance Scanning tool development for impedance-Based Stability Analysis W/M

    Description

Established in 2014, SuperGrid Institute is an independent private company with over 150 employees of 21 different nationalities. The institute is a key player for energy transition in France and throughout Europe, specialising in innovative high and medium voltage direct current (HVDC and MVDC) power systems. SuperGrid Institute also develops new technologies for the integration of renewable energies into the electricity networks of the future.

SuperGrid Institute has been ranked every year since 2018, reaching the podium 3 times in the INPI prize list.

    General Context

The dynamics of the future power systems with high penetrations of renewable energies will be strongly influenced by their interfaces – the power electronics converters, the behaviour of which are control-dependent and more complex than that of the traditional synchronous machines. Many instability accidents in the grids have been reported in recent years due to converter control interactions. To address this issue, the impedance-based stability modelling has been proposed as an efficient method to gain proper insights into such control interactions and thereby propose mitigation methods. To carry out such modelling, frequency scanning tools are important for properly characterizing the impedance profile of power converters and the development of such tools in EMT simulators is the main task of this internship.
