Internship - Life cycle assessment of medium frequency transformers W/M

  • Villeurbanne, 69100

  • Stage

  • 05/01/2026- 30/06/2026

Description

Established in 2014, SuperGrid Institute is an independent private company with over 150 employees of 21 different nationalities. The institute is a key player for energy transition in France and throughout Europe, specialising in innovative high and medium voltage direct current (HVDC and MVDC) power systems. SuperGrid Institute also develops new technologies for the integration of renewable energies into the electricity networks of the future.

SuperGrid Institute has been ranked every year since 2018, reaching the podium 3 times in the INPI prize list.

Key words: Life cycle assessment / sustainability / medium frequency transformers

General Context

SuperGrid Institute has developed a design tool for medium-frequency transformers (MFTs) and provided MFTs for pilot projects in the medium-voltage field. The overall objectives of the internship are to assess the environmental impacts of different MFT technologies or designs.

The primary objective is to quantify the environmental impacts of MFTs over a complete life cycle, based on different technologies or sizing. The secondary objective is to extract design indicators/laws explicitly linking design and performance variables (such as efficiency or volume) to environmental impacts. The team's goal is to add new design criteria/levers to the selection of MFT designs.

The intern will benefit from the expertise in the field of researchers from Ampère laboratory.
